Glossary / Term

  1. Plowing
    • The act of using a snowplow to clear snow from roads, parking lots, and other surfaces.

  1. Snowplow
    • A vehicle equipped with a large, angled blade (plow) at the front used to push snow aside while clearing pathways.

  1. Snow Pusher
    • A specialized attachment or device on a loader or skid steer used to push large amounts of snow without lifting it.

  1. Snow Blower/Snow Thrower
    • A machine that uses an auger or impeller to scoop up and throw snow, typically used for clearing large amounts of snow quickly.

  1. Snow Shoveling
    • The manual removal of snow using shovels, usually for areas inaccessible to snowplows or snow blowers.

  1. Ice Melt/Snow Melter
    • Chemical agents (e.g., rock salt, calcium chloride) applied to surfaces to accelerate snow and ice melting.

  1. Deicing
    • The process of applying deicing agents to prevent or remove ice formation on surfaces.

  1. Treated Deicer
    • A chemical additive to Salt that reduces the quantity of deicer needed. It helps reduce damages to pavements and landscape. It also works better at lower temperatures and works more quickly than untreated deicer.

  1. Snow and Ice Management Plan
    • A comprehensive plan outlining the steps, responsibilities, and strategies for handling snow and ice removal on commercial properties.

  1. Snow Hauling
    • The process of removing snow from a site and transporting it to a designated dumping location.

  1. Snow Stacking
    • Piling snow in designated areas to maximize available space and facilitate hauling if needed.

  1. Liquid Deicers
    • Deicing agents in liquid form, such as brine, applied to surfaces before a snow event to prevent snow from bonding.

  1. Snow Drifts
    • Accumulations of snow caused by wind blowing snow to higher elevations, creating uneven snow depths.
    • The process of clearing snow and ice from pedestrian walkways and sidewalks.

  1. Winter Weather Advisory
    • A weather warning issued by meteorological authorities to inform the public about potentially hazardous winter conditions.

  1. Snow Accumulation
    • The total depth of snow that has fallen or collected on a surface during a snow event.

  1. Snow Emergency
    • A declaration by local authorities urging residents to stay off the roads and clear parked vehicles during heavy snowfall or severe winter weather.

  1. Snow Melters
    • Large machines designed to melt snow quickly, often used for melting large piles of snow accumulated during significant snow events.

  1. Snow Fence
    • A barrier or fence placed strategically to control snow accumulation and drifting.

  1. Snow Load
    • The weight of snow on a structure or surface, which can be a concern for roof collapses or structural damage.

  1. Anti-icing
    • Applying deicing agents proactively before a snow or ice event to prevent the formation of ice on surfaces.
